Yet, I have found an increasing need to improve my development skills in order to be an effective administrator—first with Exchange Server 2007, then with Windows Server 2008, and now with Exchange Server 2010. Microsoft yanks Office for Mac 2011 upgrade

Halts auto delivery until it figures out why SP2 corrupts Outlook's identity database

Computerworld - Microsoft last Friday pulled an Office for Mac 2011 major update from its upgrade servers, acknowledging bugs that have corrupted the Outlook database on some machines.

Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 2 (SP2) was released April 12. That same day, users who had upgraded began reporting problems on Microsoft's support site, saying that they were unable to run Outlook, the suite's email client.

Last Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that the SP2 upgrade could in some cases corrupt the Outlook identity database, and offered workarounds to prevent that from happening for those who had not yet installed the service pack, as well as a step-by-step guide to reconstructing the database for those affected by the bug.

Three days later, Microsoft took more drastic action, shutting down the delivery of Office for Mac 2011 SP2 through the company's automatic upgrade service.

"Our goal is provide the simplest update experience for everyone -- so we have temporarily stopped pushing out the SP2 update through Microsoft AutoUpdate while we investigate the issue," Microsoft announced in a Friday post to its Office for Mac blog.

The company did not say when it would restore SP2 to the automatic upgrade channel, but did tell users they were free to manually download the service pack from its website.

Microsoft has yanked updates from its servers before. The most serious examples in recent years were in February 2010 when it stopped serving a security update to Windows XP PCs that were crashing with the notorious "Blue Screen of Death," and two years earlier, when Microsoft shut down an update for Windows Vista that crippled systems with endless reboots.

Office for Mac 2011 debuted in October 2010, and is available in two editions for the general public, as well as others for academic and enterprise customers.

Microsoft shipped the first service pack for Office for Mac 2011 just over a year ago.

Apple vs. Google vs. Microsoft: Battle for digital supremacy

On August 9, 2011, Apple's market capitalization briefly rose to $341.5 billion, edging it just ahead of Exxon, until that morning the highest-valued company in the world. The company Steve Jobs had co-created putting together computers, the one that Michael Dell had suggested shutting down 14 years earlier because it had no future, was now worth more than any other. The stock fell back by the end of the day, but it had made its mark; the transformation of Apple from financial basket case to ruler was complete. At the end of the day it was worth $346.7 billion; Microsoft was worth $214.3 billion and Google $185.1 billion.

Compared to the end of 1998 (Apple $5.54 billion, Microsoft $344.6 billion, Google $10 million), the aggregate wealth of the companies had more than doubled. Microsoft, though, had shrunk by 40%, after being outdistanced first in search, then in digital music and then in smartphones -- in the latter category by both companies.

The companies had changed enormously. Google was soon to celebrate its 13th birthday, having roared from a three-person garage start-up to web giant; it was struggling too with having nearly 29,000 staff worldwide. Larry Page, once more the chief executive, was forcing the divisions to justify themselves, getting divisional heads to explain their projects in soundbite-length memos. His greatest concern was that Google was getting too big and slow to act: "Large companies are their own worst enemy," he said in September. "There are basically no companies that have good slow decisions. There are only companies that have good fast decisions."

Where Apple hadn't heard of Google 13 years before, now it had gone from having a common cause against Microsoft to being just a business acquaintance, and sometimes opponent; Apple and Microsoft bid together against Google for patents covering the mobile business. Apple was seeking to disintermediate Google from search with the cloud-based voice search of its upcoming iPhone. And they were constantly niggling each other in smartphones and tablets. Even so, by September 2011 the majority of mobile search still came from iPhones, according to Google testimony at the US Senate.

Apple had changed. From just under 10,000 full- and part-time staff in September 1998, it had grown to being 50,000 strong, though around 30,000 were in its retail store chain; the core of the company in Cupertino remained small and relatively tight-knit. The old enmity with Microsoft still flickered occasionally, but strategically they almost ignored each other. Apple's position in PCs was set at 5% of the market. It had won in music. It didn't do search. Its position in phones and tablets had pushed Microsoft to playing catch-up; yet the Redmond company could rely on the sheer heft of 1.5 billion PC installations to ensure a stream of replacements and of new sales for Office. Apple's value, revenues and profits had all passed those of its old rival. Its reputation had been transformed from put-upon also-ran PC maker to world-spanning design brand. Tim Cook's influence was visible in its inventory, whose value was equivalent to three days' hardware sales.

Microsoft, by contrast, had gone from world-beater to catch-up. The staff at Microsoft (90,000 worldwide, compared to 27,000 in summer 1998) were a little battle-weary too. As Steve Ballmer, still the chief executive, spoke at the September 2011 all-hands company meeting in front of 20,000 employees, some simply got up and left, unhappy at the 'cloud computing' strategy, the stock's lack of movement, and the lack of excitement at their employer. The version of Windows that would truly work on tablets was still a year away. Microsoft seemed mired in its fabulously profitable past - not a leader or innovator in search or on mobiles or tablets or anything. People began whispering that Steven Sinofsky, who had conquered internal politics and got the Windows team to grapple successfully with the future of tablets and chip architectures, might be chief executive material.

Techies work harder as benefits go bust

Consumer, corporate and even SCADA systems could be at risk when Microsoft stops supporting Windows XP.

"Richard," a 40-year-old IT architect, felt like his career path had reached its end at the financial services company where he'd worked for seven years. In a shaky economy, he was grateful to have a job at all, but when his employer eliminated matching funds in his 401(k) plan, as well as its profit-sharing program -- which usually put an extra $1,000 in his pocket each year -- he knew he had to go.

IT salaries rise
"Benefits were the straw that broke the camel's back," says Richard, who, like several other IT pros interviewed, was wary of revealing his real name, given the sensitivity of the topic. He is now a director of IT security at a media company where his salary and benefits are both "a bit better" and healthcare is less expensive.

Like rubbing salt in a wound, more than a quarter of the respondents to Computerworld's Salary Survey 2012 reported that their benefits had been cut in the past 12 months as a result of the slower economy. At the same time, even though average salaries were up 2.1% for 2012, average bonuses dropped by 1.1%, creating a drag on what would otherwise feel like forward motion for many workers.

The double whammy of smaller bonuses and fewer benefits could explain why more than one-third of the 4,337 IT professionals who responded to the survey said they stayed flat financially over the past two years, with another third saying they lost ground in the same time period. Only 29% reported gaining ground.

The survey data shows that healthcare benefits, tuition reimbursements and 401(k) plans were hit the hardest. These types of benefits "tend to roll around depending on the economy," says Dallas L. Salisbury, president and CEO of the Employee Benefit Research Institute in Washington.

Jeffrey L. Martineau hasn't had a raise in 30 months or a benefits boost in 10 years. Now his employer has cut the annual lump sum payment into his retirement plan from between 3% and 5% down to 1% -- a $2,000 shortfall each year.

"Cutting back on my retirement funds is significant to me at this point," says Martineau, 53, director of automated information systems at Harc, a nonprofit in Hartford, Conn., that provides services for people with disabilities. "It will cause me to work longer, and when I do retire, it's not going to be as comfortable of a life as I would like."

Even so, the situation isn't dire enough to cause the 25-year Harc veteran to switch to a new employer. For him to consider moving, "it would have to be a really good package, and there would have to be some longevity built in," says Martineau. Besides, he adds, "I get the feeling from [Harc executives] that they would really like to bring back a higher benefit for retirement, but they just financially can't this year."

For the most part, employees have been understanding of their companies' struggles with the economy and rising healthcare costs, observers say. "They're happy to get any kind of healthcare, even if they have to pay for it. People do not want to be without healthcare," says David Foote, CEO and chief research officer at IT HR consultancy Foote Partners in Vero Beach, Fla. "Benefits matter a lot to people."


ROI of perks
Penn benefits keep IT staffers engaged
The economy has taken a toll on many companies' benefits programs, but some employers say offering perks is worth the cost. At the University of Pennsylvania -- one of the top benefits providers on Computerworld's Best Places to Work in IT 2011 list -- benefits not only keep employees from moving on, but also keep them engaged, according to Jack Heuer, vice president for human resources.

The university has managed to maintain its healthcare, 403(b) and professional development benefits over the past few years, and it has added a $5,000 adoption benefit and "a substantial subsidy" for third-party child care or adult care for up to 10 calendar days a year -- all while keeping undergraduate tuition at its lowest percentage increase in 40 years.

Heuer credits Penn's ability to increase benefits to a "strong management philosophy" that was established before the economic downturn. "We need to attract and retain employees," he says. "We recognize that our IT staff could work anywhere."

"We're doing this because of employee engagement, which helps build the university and its academic mission," he adds. "Engaged employees make the university a better place."

The average benefits package can account for 30% of a worker's total pay package, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. And while base pay mattered most to this year's Salary Survey respondents -- 73% ranked it as their top priority -- benefits were No. 2, mentioned by 59% of survey-takers.

Can benefits, or lack thereof, cause IT workers to change jobs? That depends largely on what stage of life they're in. According to a 2011 MetLife study of employee benefit trends, Generation Y employees (ages 21 to 31) generally don't feel as strongly as those in other age groups that benefits are a reason to stay at a job. In comparison, Gen Xers (ages 32 to 47), who are likely to be grappling with the costs of raising children, say workplace benefits are a strong reason to stay with their current employers.

Charging more, paying less

"Patrick," a data security specialist in Iowa and a father of three, would put himself in the latter camp. "The benefits just slowly get tighter and tighter on what they allow and what the exclusions are," he says. "When you look at salary raise versus insurance price hikes, your net gain is minimal. Trying to maintain all things related to a home life becomes difficult when a company is charging you more and paying you less."

Tuition reimbursement tops the list of preferred benefits for "Daniel," a 35-year-old customer support specialist at a financial services firm in Pennsylvania who is working toward a bachelor's degree in business management. The cost of his tuition has jumped 35% in the past three years. At first, his company covered all costs for 10 to 12 credits per year, but that has been reduced to a $5,200 flat fee.

Nonetheless, neither Gen Xer plans to leave his job solely for better perks. Likewise, young baby boomers (ages 46 to 54) don't appear to be a serious flight risk either, but job dissatisfaction could lead them to be less engaged and a potential threat to productivity, according to the MetLife study.

As for older boomers, many are finding they're financially unprepared for retirement. Derick Moore, 68, a senior staff programmer at LSI, a semiconductor and software design firm in Milpitas, Calif., is facing rising healthcare costs and contemplating what that will mean after retirement.

For doctor visits, he pays "a couple thousand [dollars] a year" out of pocket, and his health insurance premiums have risen from $80 per paycheck in 2009 to $115 in 2012. Overall, Moore insists he's "a happy camper" at his company of almost 16 years. He's just wary of the rising percentages he's being asked to pay.

Tech employees who are frustrated enough to consider switching jobs may want to look for a new employer that approaches benefits from a generational perspective and with more choices, flexibility and customization, say HR professionals.

Employees should check out whatever voluntary benefits their companies offer -- including accident insurance, additional life insurance or customized retirement plans -- and take advantage of those that fit their current lifestyles. On the healthcare side, high-deductible/lower-cost plans and health savings accounts can take some pressure off employees' paychecks.

Those concerns notwithstanding, Foote says the benefit that employees should seek out most is career advancement. He reports that most IT professionals he has surveyed "would work for lower pay if they could get somewhere in their careers."

Honing skills that are in demand and taking on new responsibilities are the best ways to insure against an uncertain job market. If you have those goods, Foote says, you'll be well positioned to bargain for a bigger salary and better benefits.

Leaked Microsoft roadmap shows 2013 launch for Office 15

Microsoft needs to better communicate plans to developers, enterprises and customers, says analyst


Computerworld - A leaked Microsoft roadmap shows that the next version of Office won't ship until the first quarter of 2013, according to the Dutch developer who found the document.

Maarten Visser, the CEO of Meetroo and a decade-long Microsoft partner, stumbled upon the roadmap a week ago after clicking on a link posted on Microsoft's Dutch website. The PDF was not password protected.

"I'm always curious about the roadmaps," said Visser in a YouTube video he posted yesterday. "For me, since we build SharePoint applications, the release of SharePoint 15 is an important thing. The better I know when this will happen, the better I will be to ready my products before launch."

Visser's Meetroo is building project management software that relies on SharePoint.

While Visser noted that much of the information in the roadmap was already known -- that Microsoft will release a public beta of Office alongside betas of supporting products like SharePoint and Exchange -- he pointed out that the document pegged the suite's final release as the first quarter of 2013.

The roadmap's date for the public beta, however, doesn't jibe with Microsoft's recent comments.

On the roadmap, the Office beta was marked as smack-dab between the third and fourth quarters. While Microsoft has not yet revealed a detailed timetable for Office, two months ago the executive who runs the Office group, P.J. Hough, said "Everyone will have the opportunity to try the Office 15 public beta later this summer."

To meet Hough's "summer" promise, the beta would have to appear in the stretch between late in the second quarter and near the end of the third.

Microsoft has not assigned the next Office an official name, but has used "Office 15" as a placeholder. The roadmap used the same label.

Another section of the roadmap showed timelines for Windows -- both client and server editions -- as well as Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) and Windows Phone.

Windows 8's schedule was bare, with only last September's Developer Preview marked, and others, including Windows Server 8 -- which is expected to launch at the same time as the client editions -- simply showing a label of "Historical Release Cadence" that stretched from mid-2012 through early 2013.

Most experts anticipate a formal release of Windows 8 -- at least the desktop version -- in the fourth quarter, possibly October, because they assume Microsoft wants new Windows 8 PCs on shelves during this year's holiday sales season.

IE10's launch was marked as some time in the second half of 2012.

One analyst said the roadmap demonstrated just how opaque Microsoft is when it comes to disseminating information to customers. "Not only do ISVs [independent software vendors] and corporations need to know release dates, but as a customer, you need to know them, too," said Michael Cherry of Directions on Microsoft.

"Everyone needs a timeline that's dependable, but it's not enough to just give us dates," Cherry said, referring to the leaked document. "You have to give us descriptions why those dates are what they are."

That's something that Microsoft doesn't do early enough in its development process, Cherry said, making it nearly impossible for software makers like Visser, companies that craft their own applications for internal use, and customers -- especially enterprises -- to make intelligent decisions on developing for a new platform or migrating to it.

Cherry argued that a reliable timeline was more important for an operating system than for an application like Office, big as the latter is to Microsoft's revenue, because fewer partners work with Office than with Windows.

"For an OS like Windows, especially WOA [Windows on ARM], I'm kind of stunned at the lack of information available at this point," Cherry said. "There are a lot of people who need to be aware of the changes in Windows and WOA."

Directions on Microsoft creates detailed roadmaps for its clients, but the job is neither simple or easy.

"It's very hard to do, to represent [a roadmap] well," said Cherry, adding that it's necessary to show dependencies between products -- how Internet Explorer relies on Windows, for instance -- and timelines that include older products for those rare times when Microsoft takes features from a new edition and backports them to a predecessor.

Cherry highlighted the roadmap's Office 15 launch in early 2013 as another example of dependency. If Office won't be available until then, Cherry was skeptical of a WOA launch in 2012, what with Microsoft having stressed the importance of Office on that tablet-oriented OS.

"Apple can be secretive because they build the hardware," Cherry said. "The more you control the ecosystem, the more closed you can be. But I've always thought of Windows as open."

Microsoft declined to comment today on the roadmap that Visser uncovered.

Microsoft starts XP retirement countdown

Windows XP and the business productivity suite Office 2003 both exit all support on April 8, 2014, a company spokeswoman said in a Monday blog post.

XP went on sale in October 2001 while Office 2003 launched October 2003.

"Windows XP and Office 2003 were great software releases for their time, but the technology environment has shifted," argued Stella Chernyak, a Microsoft marketing director.

When Microsoft pulls XP's plug, it will have maintained the OS for 12 years and 5 months, or about two-and-a-half years longer than its usual practice and a year longer than the previous record holder, Windows NT, which was supported for 11 years and 5 months.

This wasn't the first time that Microsoft has urged XP users to dump the operating system -- and perhaps their PCs too -- for newer tools.

In June 2011, a Microsoft manager said it was "time to move on" from Windows XP, while earlier that year an executive on the Internet Explorer team belittled XP as "lowest common denominator" when he explained why the OS wouldn't run the then-new IE9.

The company has not yet turned on Windows XP like it has on the 11-year-old Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). For more than two and a half years, Microsoft has urged users to give up IE6, going so far in March 2011 to launch a deathwatch website that tracks IE6's dwindling usage share.

Windows XP's share is dropping.

In the last 12 months, XP has lost nearly 10 percentage points of share, or 14 percent of what it had as of April 1, 2011, according to Internet measurement company Net Applications. If XP continues to shed share at that pace -- unlikely as a linear decline might be -- the OS would have just 17.1 percent in April 2014.

As Net Applications' data hints, some PCs will still be running Windows XP when Microsoft retires the operating system.

"Our recent Symposium survey [in October 2011] had respondents telling us they'd have 96 percent of their PCs migrated off XP by end of support," said Gartner analyst Michael Silver in an email reply to questions Monday. "But 16.5 percent of organizations say they will have more than 5 percent of their users still on XP after support ends."

Not surprisingly, Microsoft wants XP users to upgrade to Windows 7 now, perhaps figuring money in the hand with Windows 7 is better than dollars from the bush that's the unfinished Windows 8.

"We don't recommend waiting [for the next editions of Windows or Office], said Microsoft's Chernyak. "Not only is it important for companies to complete deployment before support runs out, but ... by upgrading to Windows 7 and Office 2010 today they can gain substantial results while laying the foundation for future versions."

On Microsoft's website, the company was blunt about XP's ticking clock.

"If your organization has not started the migration to a modern PC, you are late," Microsoft said, citing data that claimed OS migration programs in businesses take between 18 and 32 months to complete.

Windows Phone seen as driving a wedge between iPhone, Android

As Lumia 900 launch looms, analyst says Nokia, Microsoft need BlackBerry users to switch to Windows Phone

Computerworld - Nokia's Lumia 900 smartphones will reach AT&T stores on Sunday for $99.99, and one analyst said it could be the start of something big: Windows Phone as a market disrupter between the successful iPhone and Android phones.

Windows Phone, Microsoft's mobile operating system that's used by Nokia in its Lumia line of smartphones, is so far a small portion of the smartphone market, less than 3%. Still, Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps said in a blog Thursday that the smartphone market is "ripe for disruption ... and every player in the ecosystem (other than Google and Apple) wants a third player to wedge between Google and Apple."

Epps went on to argue that Nokia and Microsoft should try to convert every BlackBerry user to Windows Phone within two years. BlackBerry usage is declining and today makes up 8% of the global smartphone market. Grabbing those customers "would be a modest but achievable gain for Windows Phone," she said.

Attracting former BlackBerry users and a portion of Nokia's Symbian users in China and India to Windows Phone "positions Nokia and Microsoft as a viable third platform and foil for Google-Apple hegemony," Epps said. "In the dog-eat-dog smartphone market, viability in itself can be disruptive."


Epps admitted that she is a strong supporter of Windows Phone and has used the OS on the HTC Trophy and Samsung Focus Flash as her personal phones. "I will say it loud and say it proud: I love my Windows Phone," she wrote.

The coming Lumia 900, which she now uses as a review unit, is priced right at $99.99 to attract new smartphone users and to lure BlackBerry customers who are already paying their carriers for data plans. Since BlackBerry maker Research In Motion said it won't have new smartphones soon, BlackBerry customers should be a prime target, she added.

Nokia and Microsoft have "built a great product," Epps contended. In an interview, she said she likes the Lumia 900's industrial design, including the slim form factor and a body that has a "satisfying tactile feel." She said the screen resolution is better than the Trophy and has a front-facing camera that the Trophy lacks.

Epps said the Windows Phone interface uses live tiles that can keep her husband's contact information and status right on the home screen, an example of how the OS lives up to its brand promise of "putting people first." "I personally do feel a strong emotional connection with Windows Phone, and before that I had BlackBerry, so it's the first phone I've ever really loved," she said.

Some reviewers, including Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal, pointed out a weak Web browser on the Lumia 900 among other concerns. "Overall, I consider the Lumia 900 a mixed bag," Mossberg wrote. "Unless you are a big Windows Phone fan, or don't want to spend more than $100 upfront, I can't recommend the Lumia 900 over the iPhone 4S or a first-rate Android phone like Samsung's Galaxy S II series."

Epps agreed that Nokia, Microsoft and AT&T are not going to persuade an iPhone user to use Windows Phone, but maintained the Lumia 900 could attract BlackBerry and first-time smartphone buyers.

Nokia and AT&T have said they will promote the Lumia 900 in AT&T stores with more floor space and promotional signs than other phones and by training sales reps to show it off. To Epps, AT&T's support is the biggest key to Lumia 900's success, and Nokia has offered AT&T an attractive-enough profit margin on sales of the phones to promote it well.

"Carriers sell the phones they can make the most money on," she said. "He who pays the operator sells the phone."

Yes, it's exactly what it looks like: a business card made out of beef jerky. The website meatcards.com appears to be down, but its smoked offerings -- advertised as being "made from MEAT and LASERS" -- made quite a splash on the Internet when they were introduced a couple of years ago. Regardless of the economic viability of meatcards, they're definitely stuck in our memory, if not our teeth.
